7 Best Natural Ingredients for Summer Skincare

I absolutely love natural skincare! Ingredients from the pantry, natural skincare secrets from mother and grandmother have always found my rapt attention.

This is especially true during summers since I have a sensitive skin and there is always at a risk of tanning, rashes and itchiness whenever I am out in the sun.  

Very few skincare products actually suit my skin type and no amount of sunscreen or BB, CC creams can fully control the skin damage caused by sun. So for most part, I stick to the tried and tested home remedies.

These 7 ingredients mentioned below are all natural, easily available and suit all skin types. Most of these have natural cooling properties to help your skin in staying hydrated and moisturized during summers.

Natural Ingredients for Summer Skincare

Sandalwood: Sandalwood is one best natural ingredient for your skin during summers. It is a natural healer, effective in removing sunburns, tanning and any skin infections such as acne or eczema. Due to its antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties it soothes the skin, cools it and prevents further damage.

It is considered a scared ingredient in Ayurveda and since it has an amazing fragrance is also lifts your mood and remove any skin stress.

How to use Sandalwood?

Sandalwood can be used in a number of ways. You can make a paste by mixing it with different ingredients or you can use it as an essential oil:

  • For making the paste, take two tablespoons of sandalwood powder and mix it with water or milk to make a paste and apply it to the affected areas in your skin. You can also use this concoction as a face-pack.
  • Sandalwood mixed with milk and saffron makes one of the best natural exfoliation mixtures. Take a tablespoon of sandalwood and mix it with milk to form a consistent paste. Add some saffron petals to it and apply it on your skin. Wash off the pack with cold water after 15 minutes.
  • If you practice aromatherapy for stress, you can use sandalwood essential oil when you are bathing it is a natural mood enhancer and its lovely fragrance is known to reduce stress.

Papaya: It is an amazing summer fruit and a natural skin cleanser. The flavonoids present in papaya helps in collagen production keeps skin supple.

If you have a bad case of tanning during summers apply some papaya pulp in your face, the fruit contains an enzyme named papain that removes suntan. It also helps in reducing skin pigmentation and blemishes.

How to apply papaya?

  • Papaya can be used as a face mask. Beat some papaya pieces into a pulp and apply it as a mask in your face. When you feel your face drying which should take around 15-20 minutes wash it.
  • You can also mix papaya pulp with honey or/and lemon juice to make a face pack. Since papaya is rich in Vitamin A it is known to remove dead skin cells.

Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera also known as the wonder plant is one of the best nature skincare ingredients during summer and even otherwise. The plant or rather its leaves when sliced contains a gel that has bio-active compounds. Aloe Vera gel contains Vitamin A, B, C, D and E this is why so many skincare products, especially moisturisers contain aloe vera extracts.

Aloe Vera is also soothing since it contains hormones auxin and gibberellins containing anti-inflammatory properties. So if you have been out in the sun for a long time or suffer from frequent acne and eczema outbreaks you must consider using aloe vera gel.

How to apply Aloe Vera?

The easiest method that I personally prefer is directly extracting the gel from the aloe vera leaf. You can cut one aloe vera leaf and slice it up horizontally. Extract the gel by scooping it with a spoon or a knife. Store it in the fridge in steel or glass container. This gel can be used up to 6 weeks if stored properly.

Alternately you can store this gel in ice-cubes. During hot sunny day just take one of the cubes and apply it on your face, neck or any area that is tanned.

Otherwise there are plenty of aloe vera gel available in the market but make sure you buy a genuine product.

Aloe Vera gel can also be applied as a face-pack by mixing lemon-juice and coconut oil or honey. Keep this concoction on for 10-15 minutes and wash off.

Potato: For me potato is the best natural ingredient to remove tan during summers. This vegetable is also known as a natural bleaching agent and skin lightener.

Potato contains vitamin B and C along with minerals like magnesium, potassium etc. important for our health, potato face-packs are known to help maintain a clear and healthy skin.

How to apply potato?

  • Cut some potato slices and keep it in the refrigerator. Apply these slices thoroughly on your skin to remove suntan.
  • You can also peel and chop a potato or two and blend it with water to make a pulp. Apply the pulp in your face for 10 minutes before cleaning your face.
  • Potato pulp and oatmeal is an excellent face scrub. You can mix 2 tablespoon each of potato pulp and oatmeal and apply it thoroughly on your face for 15 minutes to remove all dirt and oil.
  • Similarly potato pulp and lemon or tomato juice mixed with honey also makes for really effective face pack for blemishes and dark spots.
  • You can mix 2 tablespoon each of potato pulp and lemon or tomato juice along with a tablespoon of honey to make the pack. Keep this on your face for 10-15 minutes before cleaning; you will notice a much clearer skin.

Caution: Please note both lemon and tomato is acidic as these contain citrus juice. In case you have dry skin it is advised to go for a patch test first to avoid any irritation.

Banana: Banana is loaded with Vitamin A, B and E as well as potassium. It naturally mosturises and hydrates your skin on summer days. Banana is also known to even out any roughness or dryness of skin and keep it supple.

Banana Face Pack:

I have used face-pack too many times to count always with wonderful results. There are two variations of this pack.

First, you can smash some banana pieces into a mash and mix it with honey, milk or olive oil. Wash you face with some lukewarm water before applying this pack.

After application, message your face in circular motions for about 10 minutes. Don’t put this mask for too long since it may dry and stick to your skin 10 minutes should be enough, wash your face with lukewarm water.

In the second variation, you only have to make this pack with banana mash and lemon juice instead of milk and olive oil rest of the steps are same. For me, this is one of the best natural face-packs during summers.

Watermelon: I am rather new to using watermelon on skin and so far I have loved it. Watermelon is packed with Vitamin C, lycopene and other anti-oxidants. It is 92% water which makes it naturally hydrating during summer days.

Apart from its hydrating qualities watermelon is also known for removing suntan and dark spots from skin.

Watermelon and Yoghurt mask: If you want a glowing, clear skin you have to try the combination of watermelon and yoghurt mask.

Smash some watermelon pieces and blend it well in a bowl with 2 tablespoon of yoghurt and apply the mask on your face and neck area thoroughly and wash it after 15 minutes.

Watermelon and honey mask: Watermelon and honey can be applied if you have a bad case of suntan it provides relief to your skin soothes it as well as repairs the damage.

Mix a tablespoon or two of both honey and watermelon mash and keep it on your face or apply it on the affected areas of your skin for around 15 minutes before washing it off with cold water.

Cucumber: Another natural summer ingredient that I absolutely can vouch for is cucumber. Cucumber has nutrients like vitamins A, B1, C, biotins and potassium. Since it is around 96% water it is naturally hydrating for the skin.

Whether you consume it as a salad or juice or use directly on your skin it will benefit your overall health by improving digestion and revitalizing the skin.

Did you know cucumber is a natural toner? It helps you to maintain an even skin-tone while removing impurities from your skin.

Natural Cucumber Toner

Finely slice half a cucumber after peeling the skin and blend it with water. Use a sieve to separate the cucumber pulp from its juice. You can mix it with some rosewater and store it in a spray bottle.

Keep the mixture inside a refrigerator and before going to bed use it on your face as a cleanser. You can also spray this on your skin during hot sunny days.

Also if you have baggy eyes or black dark circles under your eyes put some cucumber slices on your eyes for about 15 minutes daily for 2 weeks, your dark circles and baggy eyes will reduce considerably.

Best Natural Skincare Ingredient

This post would be incomplete without mentioning this simple ingredient – water.

Water is best for your skin; consume it as much as you can especially during summer. Washing your face with cold and occasionally lukewarm water removes all dirt, dust and oil. It is nature, cost-effective and takes minimum effort and time.

So these are some of the ways I incorporate natural skincare remedies during summer days. Most of these suit all skin type and are not known to have any side-effects.
