Game Supplies

Before you get started, gather the following:

  • Halloween Taboo cards (print the free version below or use the complete bundle)
  • A timer (30–60 seconds works well)
  • A score sheet and pencil (optional)
  • A small bowl or box to hold the cards (optional)

How to Play Halloween Taboo

  • Divide players into two or more teams.
  • Shuffle the Halloween Taboo cards and place them face down.
  • Choose one player to be the clue giver for the first round.
  • Set a timer for 30–60 seconds.
  • The clue giver draws a card and tries to get their team to guess the main Halloween word without saying any of the taboo words listed on the card.
  • The clue giver may use descriptions, synonyms, gestures with their hands (if you allow them), or examples, but cannot say any part of the answer or any forbidden word.
  • If a taboo word is spoken, skip the card or award it to the opposing team, depending on the rules you choose before the game begins.
  • Teams earn one point for each correctly guessed card before the timer runs out.
  • Continue taking turns until every player has had a chance to be the clue giver or until you reach a set score. The team with the most points wins.

🧡Game Tip: For younger children, start with easier words. Feel free to relax the rules.

🧡For a more challenging game for teens, and adults, consider setting lesser time-limits, as the game advances.

Easy Rule Variations

If you are playing with younger kids or first-time players, try one of these simple rule changes to make the game easier.

  • Skip unfamiliar words. If no one knows the answer, simply set the card aside and draw a new one.
  • Allow one pass. Each team can skip one difficult card per round.
  • Kid-friendly option. Allow kids to use one taboo word.
  • Mix easy and challenging cards. Remove any words that may be too difficult for younger players before you begin.
  • Turn it into Pictionary. Instead of giving verbal clues, draw the word while avoiding letters, numbers, or writing the answer.
